Humberto Ardon
He is not an office man, nor will he ever be.
It is 5:45 on a cold morning in the mountains of Honduras, when the sun has yet to rise above the hills and the air is filled with the scent of damp earth and freshly picked coffee.
Humberto Ardón is already on his feet, as he is every day, ready to walk through his farms, which stretch from 1,600 to 1,950 meters above sea level. He is not an office man, nor will he ever be. "Coffee is love," he often says, and in his lands, among the pine, sweetgum, guamo, and oak trees, he finds the freedom he wouldn’t trade for anything.
Humberto is not just any producer. His 42 hectares, divided into several plots, are only the beginning. He also buys coffee from small producers in the region, offering them financing and fertilizer in exchange for coffee. It’s a system that works: they get the resources to cultivate, and he gets quality coffee to sell. Among his varieties, he grows Lempira, IH-Café 90, Catuaí, and Obatá, each adapted to the unique conditions of his land, where in some areas shade is scarce due to the altitude, while in others, the trees protect the coffee plants from the intense sun.
Coffee is not just his job; it is his passion. And although the weather at these heights can be unpredictable, Humberto knows that every bean he produces carries with it the effort of generations. His father, before him, grew Indian coffee, corn, and raised cattle. From a young age, Humberto worked by his side, learning the secrets of the land. Now, even though his cousin Miguel Pérez—with whom he grew up and whose mother is his aunt—is also part of Cafesmo Lenca, each of them follows their own path. "We don’t work together, but we support each other," Humberto comments with a smile.
On the farm, the work never stops. He has permanent employees and others who come during the peak season, but the heart of the operation remains with him. He cannot imagine his life any other way: "I could never work in an office; it would be so boring." The countryside is his space, his therapy. There, he unwinds and feels alive
But Humberto is not content to rest on his laurels. He has clear goals: he wants to develop long-term relationships with European buyers. His capacity allows him to offer full containers, guaranteeing consistent coffee profiles, all from a single farm. Currently, his coffees score SCA 83-84 without much effort, but his ambition is to reach 85-86. "I have enough land to hire employees and train some of them in the preparation of microlots," he explains with determination.
And although coffee is his great love, it is not the only thing that defines him. Humberto also has a strong connection to cattle. "I grew up with cows alongside my father," he recalls. By the age of 14, he was already negotiating the buying and selling of cattle in the region, and today, even though coffee takes up much of his time, cattle remain another passion. "I’m always working; I don’t have other hobbies. Work is my passion, not an obligation."
Humberto’s future is full of possibilities. With his experience, his land, and his love for what he does, he knows he can take his coffee to new heights.
And as the sun rises over the mountains, illuminating the coffee fields and the trees that protect them, he moves forward, step by step, bean by bean, building a legacy that goes beyond his 42 hectares.
