Merlin Hernández García, Fincas Las Quebraditas and La Montañita

Merlin likes to read books. Especially books about history or law.

It's not surprising that Merlin is an accountant and expects to graduate from law school in August 2022. In fact, Merlin isn't just any accountant; she's our very own Cafesmo accountant.

He spends most of his days in our office, where he makes sure that every producer receives the payment they are entitled to, and that no check or transfer leaves Cafesmo without his keen eye having checked it first.

But Merlin is also a coffee farmer. Her parents were growing coffee even before she was born, and she spent much of her childhood playing on the farm. When she got a little older, she started helping out. Like many children, she helped her parents, especially during harvest time. But unlike most, instead of helping with picking and washing, Merlin mainly counted the volume of coffee harvested, paid the workers, and kept the books. Luckily, she has two brothers and two sisters who were happy to let Merlin handle the "boring" work while they helped their father in the fields.

That said, once she started working at Cafesmo, Merlin was exposed to the world of specialty coffees and, at first almost imperceptibly, then very willingly, her views began to broaden and her interest in cultivating quality micro-lots became palpable.

Now, Merlin owns two plots of land that together measure 7 hectares. Although she still maintains her office job, and her father and brothers help with much of the work during the peak season, Merlin is much more actively involved in drying and preparing the micro-batches that the family processes from the best beans, which they select during the second harvest on each of their farms.

It wasn't until 2020 that Merlin and her family began learning about preparing specialty coffee batches, and in 2022 Merlin sold a batch to a roaster in Sweden who had purchased one of her micro-batches. She hopes to deepen her knowledge and gain more experience each year, in order to establish long-term relationships with a select group of specialty coffee roasters.
