Oscar Ramirez, Finca Las Torreras

I started working in the cafe in 1990, when I was nine years old.

My dad worked in a plant nursery and in farm renovation, and I had to help him to ensure the family income. About five years later, I started working on a farm myself.

My wife also has a long history in the coffee industry. She started working when she was very young, and together we manage our plots, which together measure 3 hectares. I focus mainly on renovation and farm management, while my wife focuses primarily on drying. We harvest together during peak season.

It hasn't been easy, but little by little we've managed to grow and build our assets. Our son has lived in the United States for many years and sent the necessary funds to Honduras to buy part of our land. And our daughter, Rosanni, works for Cafesmo, where she's responsible for traceability and certifications. Her expertise is invaluable to the work we do on the farm.

And our cousin, Allan, also helps us. He and his wife, Yoreci, have more experience preparing micro-batches and support us at key moments. We need that differentiation in quality and price to improve our income.

And yet, we also have financial support from our son in the United States, and I also work as a construction worker during the off-season. That said, I'm very happy with my life and my job as well.

I don't have bosses, no one dictates my day. I work when I want, on what I want, and in my own way. That sense of freedom is very valuable to me. Plus, I work in a very healthy environment, surrounded by nature, with a climate that's never too cold or too hot. The truth is, I feel very grateful and happy.
